Periodontics
Periodontics concerns the structures and tissues that surround and support the teeth, and the diseases that affect them. Our department trains pre-doctoral dental students through laboratory, pre-clinical, and clinical instruction in order to diagnose, treat, and prevent periodontal disease.
Students learn to recognize and treat periodontal diseases at various stages of severity, and how to combine with the phases of comprehensive dental care. Beginning their first year, students may participate in the Periodontics Clinic, where they treat patients under the supervision of licensed faculty. Upon completion of our program, they have a clear understanding of clinical phenomena in terms of underlying tissue changes and the correlation between the basic sciences and clinical aspects of periodontal disease.
