Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College is strategically housed at one of the nation’s oldest and largest, private historically black academic health science centers dedicated to educating physicians, dentists, researchers, public health professionals and health policy experts. Since its inception in 2009, the RWJF Center for Health Policy has been committed to providing leadership in health policy education, training and research to doctoral, medical, dental and graduate students. Through a partnership with Vanderbilt University’s College of Arts and Science, the Center fully supports minority doctoral students pursuing a Ph.D. in sociology, political science and economics. We invite you to peruse our website to learn more about our various programming and events.
The Health Policy Scholars Program offers Meharry students in the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Graduate Studies & Research, who have educational and research interests in health policy and social science research, the opportunity to participate in coursework, seminars and research activities leading to the completion of a Certificate in Health Policy to be awarded in conjunction with the student’s declared academic program degree.
The Certificate in Health Policy Program is an excellent way for medical, dental, doctoral and graduate students to enhance their academic experience. As the only health policy certificate program in Middle Tennessee, we provide a rigorous curriculum taught by leading experts in the fields of health policy, health care and social science, that allow students to gain insight into topics such as: health law, health economics, health equity, social determinants of health, and health disparities.
Health Reform and Health Equity
Through lectures, readings, collaborative debate and discussion, oral presentation, and written work, students will develop the background and skills to approach a range of problems in the interdisciplinary field of health equity where major policy issues are constantly evolving. As the United States health system continues to undergo transformation, special attention will be paid in this course to the full continuum of our health system, and will provide students a holistic understanding of the key public policies impacting health equity in the United States.
