Hazardous Waste

Meharry Medical College uses hazardous materials in teaching, research, building operations, and in housekeeping. Proper procedures for acquisition, utilization, storage and disposal are critical to ensure that their adverse effects are eliminated. As defined by the United States EPA under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), hazardous waste is a solid, liquid, or gas that is a discarded material and is abandoned, recycled or otherwise inherently waste like. Hazardous waste may include chemicals, medical waste such as infectious agents, blood or blood-related products, sharps and laboratory ware.
